Localized evacuations in preparation for Hurricane Irene are causing unavoidable service delays along the Eastern coastline of the United States.

Hurricane Irene is slowly moving its way up the coast, poised to slam into the Northeast region Saturday evening and promising to deliver a destructive combination of storm surge, damaging winds and flooding rain. Areas inland, including all of New Jersey and Connecticut and areas of the Hudson Valley will feel the impacts of this destructive storm as well.
For New York City, damaging winds will be one of the main impacts. Those winds will be particularly strong around the city's skyscrapers. Extreme rainfall
Mayor Bloomberg has not yet called for the mandatory evacuation of areas within New York. However, the city is preparing for Irene with planned shutdowns of mass transit beginning on Saturday. Transportation will be disrupted. Urban and coastal flooding is also of utmost concern.

Both New York and New Jersey have declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm. Governor Cuomo urged residents to take stock of their emergency supplies, and assist elderly and disabled neighbors in the case of emergency orders.

The threat level is "EXTREME" along the East Coast from eastern North Carolina to southern New England.
Irene is a hurricane that poses an extraordinary threat and is one that no one has yet experienced in North Carolina to the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast and New England. This includes Norfolk, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, and Boston. This hurricane has the potential to produce flooding rains, high winds, downed trees (on houses, cars, power lines) and widespread power outages. Significant impacts along the immediate coast include high waves, surge and beach erosion.
Timing: Irene will make its closest approach to North Carolina late Friday night through Saturday. Northeast U.S. impacts would be Saturday night through early Monday.
