Colorado Railcar Closes Doors

A Colorado company that made diesel-fueled passenger cars for railroads and commuter lines has closed its doors, citing a "major liquidity problem."

Colorado Railcar Manufacturing shut down Dec. 23 and posted a notice on its Web site saying it had no employees effective Dec. 31. The notice by company CEO Larry Salci says Colorado Railcar in the process of liquidation.

A recording on the company's phone Saturday said no messages would be answered.

It was unclear how many people were on staff when the company closed. The Rocky Mountain News reported in spring 2007 that Colorado Railcar had 150 employees.

The company, based in Fort Lupton, about 65 miles north of Denver, was the only U.S. manufacturer of diesel-propelled passenger cars. The cars were the only such vehicles federally certified as crash-worthy.

There was discussion by the Denver-based Regional Transportation District about using the diesel-powered cars on four corridors of its expanded rail service, FasTracks, but soaring diesel fuel prices ended that.

Only the 41-mile northwest corridor from Denver to Boulder and Longmont plans to use the diesel-powered units.

FasTracks spokeswoman Pauletta Tonilas said other companies have been doing prototypes and research and development on diesel-powered rail cars.

"It's unfortunate what's happened with Colorado Railcar, but RTD was not just banking on them," Tonilas said.

In October, TriMet, the public transit agency in Portland, Ore., offered financial support to Colorado Railcar, which was behind schedule on orders from the agency.

Tom Rader founded the company. He stepped down from running it last year but was still its largest shareholder.

Rader also was involved with GrandLuxe Rail Journey, which operated luxury train trips and shut down earlier this year.

Ah, ben y'en a un qui suit!!
Oui, effectivement, j'ai vu par la suite que je m'avait trompé...
Je trouverais une photo d'autorail fabriqué par cette boite plus tard.
Il y a les photos d'autorails reconditionnés.
La photo venait de là;
